With storytelling lyrics, soulful vocal harmonies accompanied by, unique mandolin and fiddle licks, Son of John delivers original songs about love and the simplicities and complexities of life that are both old and new country.
Son of John was born in 2017, and although the name is new, the history of playing together spans more than a decade. Son of John formed as a result of performing live shows together as father and son promoting Johnny's individual solo project, an album called Until You Get There (produced by Tom McKillip). Prior to that Johnny, a two time British Columbia Country Music Association nominee garnered success and a BCCMA nomination for his solo project Prairie Roots Grow Deep. As a duo, Son of John has toured BC and AB performing for arts councils at soft-seat venues, and concert halls.
Johnny, influenced by country greats like Merle Haggard, Neil Young and Blue Rodeo, is the primary songwriter and brings his vocal talent, harmonica and rhythm guitar to the pair. Originally from Saskatchewan, Johnny grew up farming, riding the tractor, and listening to his parents sing gospel music.
Javan, nominated by the BC Country Music Association for 2018 and 2019 Fiddle and Mandolin Player of the Year, is a songwriter in his own right and by sharing lead vocals, brings elements of today's country artists like High Valley, Sam Hunt, Thomas Rhett and Chris Stapleton to their sound. As a multi-instrumentalist, Javan plays and features fiddle and mandolin in Son of John's music, bending to the brink the genre of modern country by adding elements of folk, roots, and bluegrass.
