What do you get when you combine a veteran singer/songwriter and classically trained jazz star, seasoned expertise and youthful exuberance, old school groove with Broadway chops? ROOTS & GROOVES is a multi genre conversation across the generations spiced with improvisation, theatrics and humour. It’s also the title of Rick and Nico’s CD released September 2017.
“Rick and Nico brought our audience to its feet with a new kind of music: Appalachian mountain dulcimer and sophisticated jazz piano combined with entertaining banter, harmonies, rhythms and improvisation!” Nanaimo Jazz Festival
Rick Scott brings to the stage 40 years experience as musician, actor, humourist and raconteur. Since pioneering rogue folk with iconic trio Pied Pumkin, he has performed in nine countries and released 19 recordings honoured with 3 Juno nominations, WCMA, Parents’ Choice and Canadian Folk Music Awards.
“Rick uses every fibre of his being to translate private experience into shared experience, what he does is a day-glo yo-yo of theatre, music, mime, poetry, philosophy and confession spinning on a string of laughter.”
Nico wrote Rick a fan letter when he was eight years old and at 23 orchestrated Rick’s music for symphony. He’s in constant demand across Canada as arranger and musical director for long run stage shows when not touring with Rick or chanteuse Joelle Rabu.
“Nico Rhodes is astonishing, you have to hear and see him caress, cajole and at times almost punish the piano. Breathtakingly fresh sounds and style radiate from this young musician.”
Rick says, “Nico is on fire! Not since Pied Pumkin have I experienced such unfettered creativity.”
“Wow, wow, wow! I loved this show. These two are amazing together!” Char’s Landing
